Headless Horseman -
Usually associated with America the headless horseman is actually a creature from European folklore that dates back to the Middle Ages. In Irish mythology it is a type of fairy and known as the dullahan, a headless rider on a black horse who carries his mouldy head under his arm. The head has small black eyes that dart around like buzzing flies and it sports a grotesque grin that stretches from ear to ear. The dullahan carries a whip made of the spines of the dead and is sometimes seen with a carriage that is also made from the pieces of corpses.
The dullahan is seen as a death omen and it is said that when it stops riding someone is doomed to die. If the head of a dullahan calls your name you will drop dead on the spot. The dullahan does not like being watched or witnessed. If it catches someone who dares to spy on it it will throw blood at the person, this is seen as a mark of who is doomed to die next. There is also a chance that it will lash out the eyes of the watcher using its whip.
It is impossible to block the path of a dullahan to protect yourself from it. Doors, gates and locks will open on their own when it is nearby. The only thing it is frightened of is gold, even the smallest piece of the metal could protect you from a dallahan. Similar stories of a headless horseman have been heard in Scotland, though the horse is headless as well, in Germany, sometimes with large black dogs running alongside the horse, and of course various parts of America.
